Partner projects in paludiculture

The European Union is investing in paludiculture research because it may offer a lucrative land use that also protects the soil and captures carbon. There are currently two other major EU projects investigating paludiculture in Europe. Palus Demos is working closely with these projects to share research findings and amplify the efforts of each initiative.

Paludi4All

Paludi 4 All LogoPaludi4All is a Horizon Europe project that explores the socio-economic, environmental, and climate aspects of paludiculture. Through an interdisciplinary and innovation-driven approach, the project assesses the potential of paludiculture to mitigate climate change, protect ecosystems, and create new opportunities for jobs and income in rural areas. By bringing together experts, practitioners, and stakeholders across Europe, Paludi4All aims to develop and promote scalable solutions for the upscaling of paludiculture.

Paludi4All aims to support the climate, nature restoration and carbon farming objectives of the EU by facilitating the development of paludiculture via innovative solutions arising from a network of practitioners and researchers.

The project supports the sustainability transition of paludiculture by pursuing the following specific objectives:

  • Enhance understanding of the economic implications of paludiculture for farms and society.
  • Develop a comprehensive market perspective to support viable and competitive paludiculture value chains.
  • Accelerate the upscaling of paludiculture in Europe through socially and stakeholder-driven approaches.
  • Improve knowledge on the environmental impacts and potential of paludiculture for climate change mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

The project consortium consists of University of Greifswald, Thünen Institute, Radboud University, Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE), Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), and Institute of Technology and Life Sciences National Research Institute in Poland (ITP-PIB). The project is coordinated by Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR). A full overview of the project consortium is available at: paludi4all.eu/about/partners

PaluWise

PaluWise LogoPaluWise is a Horizon Europe project dedicated to accelerating the transition towards paludiculture, or wet farming, as a climate-smart form of sustainable agriculture. This innovative land use can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 70-80%, offering substantial potential to support the EU’s climate targets and biodiversity strategy while also providing a sustainable income for farmers and landowners. By working across research, policy, and practice, PaluWise aims to unlock the full socio-economic and environmental potential of these wet landscapes.

The PaluWise project is driving the development of advanced solutions for the productive use of rewetted degraded peatlands, by following a specific approach to paludiculture:

  • Finding the best sites for rewetting.
  • Creating hands-on guidelines for farmers.
  • Connecting stakeholders across Europe.
  • Quantifying climate & environmental benefits.
  • Driving widespread Paludiculture adoption.

Through four large-scale demonstration sites across Europe (Finland, The Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom), PaluWise is actively showcasing best practices in paludiculture, demonstrating how degraded organic soils can be successfully converted into thriving, sustainable ecosystems for widespread deployment.

The PaluWise project is powered by a diverse consortium of 18 leading European expert organisations, coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE). This collective expertise ensures a holistic approach to scaling paludiculture across Europe. To meet the team and explore the full consortium overview, visit the PaluWise website.
