About Hegewarren
The Hegewarren is a peat meadow polder in the Dutch province of Friesland, situated southeast of Leeuwarden and adjacent to major nature and recreation areas, including National Park De Alde Feanen. De polder is about 360 hectares in size.
Within the provincial peat meadow program of Fryslân, Hegewarren currently operates as a ‘peat innovation polder’, to test and demonstrate how peatland water management can be transformed to reduce peat oxidation and support viable land use under higher groundwater levels.
The paludiculture demosite (‘water-farm’) in the Hegewarren focuses on upscaling wet cultivation (paludiculture), particularly cattail and common reed, to explore biomass production chains (e.g., bio-based materials) under substantially wetter conditions. At the moment, the total surface of paludiculture crops amounts to approx. 10 hectares.
