Typha at Burkmeer: Harvesting a Paludiculture Pioneer
Typha, also known as bulrush or cattail, is one of the main paludiculture crops being trialled by Palus Demos. A versatile and sustainable plant, typha has significant potential as a material for both construction and textiles.
At Burkmeer, just outside Amsterdam, one of our project partners is growing typha at higher water levels than conventional farming allows. Last month, they harvested typha from the site using three different techniques. While wet weather presented some drying challenges, the material has now been successfully dried and is being developed into insulation products.
This is the second successful typha harvest for the project, following one in Manchester last autumn.
