Paludiculture offers many options for farmers and industry. That’s why, on our 13 sites across the UK, The Netherlands and Ireland, we are trialling different crops and land uses, including typha, food and carbon farming.
We’ve just launched an interactive map of these sites. This allows anyone to click on an icon and learn more about any site. Our sites are also listed by country and location.
Each entry provides:
- Photos of the site
- The precise location
- What is being grown (e.g typha, sphagnum, mixed vegetation)
- A brief site description and its current, most up-to-date status
- The year the site was established
- A contact detail for the site
We have also details and stories what is happening at the sites, with more information due to go live in the coming weeks.
For our Ballaghurt site in Ireland, for example, we’ve got the following information:
Ballaghurt is a key site for paludiculture trials in Ireland, with 20 hectares of the 50 hectares site planted with sphagnum.
The Ballaghurt Demonstrator was used for industrial peat production from 1981 until 2020. Currently the cutaway area comprises largely bare peat of depths from 2 – 7metres. Rehabilitation of the site began in 2024 as part of a Peatland Climate Action Scheme.
The entire Ballaghurt site consists of ca.400ha, while the area for Palus Demos comprises ca. 50 ha, of which 20ha will be planted with sphagnum. The sphagnum will be a mixture of propagated plugs (from project partner Micropropagation Services) and translocated material from nearby BnM areas. The plugs at the site are planted at different densities and some fields include co-planting with various grass mixtures.”
